Alcohol Rehab for Women
At Abbington House, we offer a safe, supportive space where women can finally let go of the burden they’ve been carrying – emotionally, physically and mentally – and heal from problematic drinking, but more than that, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with a version of themselves they may have lost along the way.
Why Women Turn to Alcohol
Alcohol addiction doesn’t look the same for everyone. For women, it often hides behind closed doors – behind the mask of motherhood, caregiving, menopause or just “getting on with things”. Alcohol can become a coping mechanism for all kinds of pain, some seen, most unseen.
Many of the women we support at Abbington House didn’t set out to become dependent on drinking. It crept in slowly, often during seasons of intense stress:
- Hormonal shifts like perimenopause or menopause that disrupted sleep, heightened anxiety and left them feeling unlike themselves
- Ongoing caregiving roles where they were responsible for everyone else’s wellbeing but rarely their own
- Unhealed trauma, often dating back to childhood or masked by toxic relationships
- Cultural norms like the “wine mum” narrative, which makes daily drinking seem harmless or even expected.
The Unique Challenges Women Face in Getting Help
Seeking treatment is never easy, and for women, it’s especially complicated.
You may worry about being judged – by your family, by society, or even by yourself.
You may be asking, “What will happen to my children while I’m away?” Or “Is my drinking really bad enough?”
Some women tell us they’ve been gaslit by their partners or dismissed by doctors when they tried to speak about their struggles. Others were handed medication instead of real support or told that their symptoms were “just menopause.”
At Abbington House, we don’t dismiss or blame. We listen so that we can build a care plan that centres you.
A Safe and Supportive Environment for Women
Healing from alcohol addiction isn’t just about stopping drinking, it’s about creating the conditions where real, lasting recovery can happen. For women, that often means:
- Therapists who understand gendered trauma
- Private, peaceful accommodation where you can feel safe
- Groups where it’s okay to cry, share or just listen without pressure
- Space to process the emotional impact of caregiving, loss or menopause
- Restoring confidence, boundaries, and your sense of self-worth.
We create a nurturing environment where you can reconnect with who you are outside of alcohol and outside of the roles you’ve had to carry for others.

Alcohol Use During Menopause: What No One Tells You
Many women first notice their drinking increasing during perimenopause or menopause. And it’s not a coincidence. Hormonal fluctuations can cause anxiety, insomnia, mood swings and severe fatigue, often without warning.
For women who were already juggling family, work and emotional labour, these changes can feel overwhelming.
Alcohol becomes a way to manage the noise, to fall asleep, to soothe a discomfort that no one else seems to understand. But over time, the very thing that offered relief starts to take more than it gives.
At Abbington House, we look at all of these possible causes because treating addiction without understanding why it began doesn’t lead to lasting recovery.

A Safe Space to Begin Again
Recovery isn’t about willpower. It’s about support. It’s about having a space where you’re seen, heard, and gently guided back to yourself.
At Abbington House, we don’t expect you to have the answers. We will explore the issues you are facing as a woman with her own unique story.
For Mothers, Daughters, Carers & Professionals
You are worthy of love and support.
Whether you’re a stay-at-home mum, a business leader, a retired carer or a woman who’s simply had enough – Abbington House is a place where you’ll be met without judgement.
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been drinking, how much you’re drinking now or whether you’ve “tried to quit before,” you deserve to feel safe and happy. At Abbington House, we’ll meet you whatever stage you’re at, with a team who understand what it’s like to walk this path, and who are ready to walk it with you.
“I didn’t think a place like this existed; somewhere I could just be without shame. The team here helped me find parts of myself I thought were gone forever.”
“As a mum of three, I was terrified to ask for help. But I’m so glad I did. Abbington House gave me the tools and the time to reset properly.”
